There's a bun in the oven!

Hey OV, I'm talkin' 'bout YAY!

Two other things:

1. Whoever left a flask in my car, I hope you've got bail money next time. J/K dudes, but it's in my room.

2. For those who enjoy Thorns of Life, here's a fix.

Games OVer Poems

The OV loves a good game. You know that already. And this week, we broke into "school night IS game night" territory with the classic game of Scattegories. In honor of this, I've rolled an "OV" and written a poem:

Overachieving
Oaklanders give
Voice to
"Venus in the moon of Saturn made me late!"

I know, the metaphors and symbolism are heavy. But that's what it's like in the OV.

[Next week, a sonnet.]

I found this children's book over at the Rockridge library today.

NO OV ENERYTHING

In our best get-out-the-vote effort yet, this attractive pub trivia team (plus Lizzy, not pictured here) took first place in a narrow (but satisfying) victory at Cato's. Highlights: O'Jays, Sanjay Gupta, Bassoon, Aspirin. Mary Louise Parker, naked with a snake. Steel.

Pictured: four members of No On Everything about to drink the spoils of victory.

The new E(o)vil Dead, or more post-Ft13 dreck?

If there's one thing that unites the house like a hub of disparate spokes, it's Sam Raimi. From those of us who defined their adolescence by an appreciation for Ash's chainsaw hand replacement, to those who only tuned in once he started autering the second most famous red and blue American icon, there's a quirky place in all 6 of our hearts for Sam. So now he heads back to his roots and all are left to wonder at the outcome. Pretzelknot and Nasty J will be sitting this one out, on principle of "it scary me!" certain 80 hr work week schedules aside. And just as around 50 minutes into Evil Dead 2, we are left with four. Personally, I 'm most nervous that Raimi may have lost that "I'm just kidding - not really - of course I'm kidding," sentiment. We expect him to be silly now, and the pressure could force him to be overly self-conscious in the horror genre. I worry that without that almost pre-teen earnestness, it's gonna either rise into simple B-horror boredom or descend into satirical boredom. Can he tread the line, or should I just allow myself to be exponentially more excited about this movie?

Either way, the OV is taking this week off from the theater.

OV'n for business

I will be done with the final step of a year-long process at 11:30 on Saturday. The OV will be open for pop-ins.

Just puttin' it out there...

Otherwise, Lizzy and I will just go jeans-shopping, a la 2002.

Wo'verine and Edward Cullen: An In-Depth Analysis

**watch out for Twilight and Wolverine spoilers below**

I'm sure I'm not the only person who saw the Wolverine movie last weekend and was struck by his similarities to Edward Cullen, the vampire hottie from Twilight. In case you didn't happen to notice, here are a few.
First of all, they have quite a few physical similarities. Both have hot bods that may or may not have come from hours of weight training. There are no scenes of Wolverine hitting the gym in the movie and we know that Edward was dying of Spanish influenze before he became a vampire and his body became incapable of changing. However, Wolverine definitely has some serious visible muscles and Edward's body is described as having, "perfect musculature no longer merely hinted at behind concealing clothes" when Bella finally gets a glimpse of him with his shirt unbuttoned (Meyer, 256).
Both Wolverine and Edward Cullen are virturally indestructable; the former as a result of adamantium bones and the latter from his vampirey stone-like body makeup. Both use their indestructability to defend women they love. We know that Edward is tortured by the idea of living forever should something happen to Bella (pre-Book 4 of course). Is it fair to project some of that anguish onto Wolverine? I think so. Think about his reaction to Kayla's death. His desire for revenge causes him to completely devalue his own safety. After the adamamantium he is full of rage and one could imagine he might be wishing for death to release him from his pain, but he continues to be an indestructable fighter.

So those are my deep thoughts about Edward Cullen and Wolverine. Please share any other similarities you notice in a comment!
