**watch out for Twilight and Wolverine spoilers below**
I'm sure I'm not the only person who saw the Wolverine movie last weekend and was struck by his similarities to Edward Cullen, the vampire hottie from Twilight. In case you didn't happen to notice, here are a few.
First of all, they have quite a few physical similarities. Both have hot bods that may or may not have come from hours of weight training. There are no scenes of Wolverine hitting the gym in the movie and we know that Edward was dying of Spanish influenze before he became a vampire and his body became incapable of changing. However, Wolverine definitely has some serious visible muscles and Edward's body is described as having, "perfect musculature no longer merely hinted at behind concealing clothes" when Bella finally gets a glimpse of him with his shirt unbuttoned (Meyer, 256).
Both Wolverine and Edward Cullen are virturally indestructable; the former as a result of adamantium bones and the latter from his vampirey stone-like body makeup. Both use their indestructability to defend women they love. We know that Edward is tortured by the idea of living forever should something happen to Bella (pre-Book 4 of course). Is it fair to project some of that anguish onto Wolverine? I think so. Think about his reaction to Kayla's death. His desire for revenge causes him to completely devalue his own safety. After the adamamantium he is full of rage and one could imagine he might be wishing for death to release him from his pain, but he continues to be an indestructable fighter.
So those are my deep thoughts about Edward Cullen and Wolverine. Please share any other similarities you notice in a comment!

SO while Cullen may win in the speed department, and its true that only other vampires and werewolves can kill Cullen and his kin, I'm pretty sure Wolverine is exactly the person for the job of tearing him apart limb-from-limb and burning all the shimmering little pieces.

ReplyDeleteEdward Cullen has another special ability: he can read minds. So when Wolverine tries to take him down he will anticipate his every move and be untouchable.
